Abell R B, ka Roy, aka The Ab b 1931, d 2020
Roy came to Moseley in 1948. He started as a brisk right arm seamer, then turned to leg spin. Roy became the first bowler to take 1000 Birmingham League wickets – 800 plus in the First Division (now called Premier) and the remainder in the Second. Roy retired in 1982. Won the League title 7 times between 1959 and 1970 under the astute leadership of David Heath. Roy took 50 wickets in a season twice,and holds what is probably a League record of 6 for 2 against West Bromwich Dartmouth in 1958. His batting was individual. He played for Warwickshire once, and their 2nd XI four times. He also played for the Birmingham League 1959 -73. See Test Match Special Tribute.
Taught at the Birmingham College of Art 1957-82. A very distinguishes artist and painter, particularly of landscapes.

David Abell b 1959
Medium pace bowler and batsman. Played for Moseley and Aston Unity in the old Birmingham League and had several games for Warwickshire 2nd and U25 XI’s at the age of 18. Was a regular in the 2nd XI Championship winning sides in the 70’s playing with father and life-long friends David Heath (captain) and Martin Heath. Played for Alrewas in the Derbyshire League for over a decade, which included many games with son Christopher Abell (b 2003). Also played for Aston University, Saffron Walden, Solihull Municipal, Centre Set, and Elford. Level 3 ECB Coach and Birmingham League Vice President.
Richard Abell b 1964
All rounder, middle order batsman and swing bowler. Played for Moseley until the age of 14, Represented Warwickshire junior age groups alongside Ian Stokes, captained Birmingham Schools and moved to Sutton Coldfield playing in the Midland Cricket Club Championships, becoming 1st X1 VC to Graham Williamson in the mid 80’s. Was 1st X1 Captain at Manchester University and with Walsall won the UK Indoor Cricket Championships, representing the UK at indoor cricket at the world expo in Brisbane in 1988. Moved to Sussex in the late 80’s and played in the Sussex League for Haywards Heath. Retired from competitive cricket when returning to the Midlands in 1990. In 2011 was awarded an OSCA by Staffordshire Cricket and was runner up in the national awards. Married with three children Richard is a level 2 coach and is currently Chairman of his village cricket club Whittington in Staffordshire, where he has helped develop a new ground.
